Frampton on Severn

Frampton on Severn bird watching on 8th May 2023

At 10am on a wet overcast day 11 members braved the inclement weather forecast and gathered at the Frampton on Severn car park..

We decided to walk anti clockwise around the lakes starting at the Sailing Club Lake. A Wren was heard and then seen on the way to the lakes. At the sailing club an Oyster Catcher and several Common Tern were immediately spotted on the jetty, Pied Wagtail , Mute Swan Great Crested Grebe and Tufted Duck soon followed.

Cettis and Reed Warblers were heard as we walked around the sailing lake however the highlight was the vast numbers of Swifts, Swallows and House Martins seen swerving and wheeling overhead. At the copse after the lake a Robin, Song Thrush, Chiff Chaff and Blackcap were heard.

At the junction of the 2 paths, we took the path on the right to get to the far side of the other main lake where Hobbys had been seen on previous days. On the way we were constantly serenaded by Chiff chaffs and Song Thrush. When we eventually arrived by the lakeside we had really good views of 4 Hobbys.

Further around the lake Barnacle, Canada , Greylag, and a Ross’s Geese were seen and also Shelduck, Coot and Moorhen.

It was a really good bird watching day, where 36 species of bird were spotted and 4 species were heard, with everyone going home happy with the quality and quantity of birds seen and that the rain held off until we arrived back at the car park.
