What is Mah Jong? you may ask, so perhaps a brief explanation might help you decide if this group is for you. We play to Western rules.
The game of Mah Jong is played with a set of decorative tiles. There are three suits - bamboos, circles and characters- winds, dragons, flowers and seasons. The object of the game is to complete an acceptable collection of tiles that make up one of many Mah Jong hands. The game is a good balance of luck and skill and there are similarities with card games such as Rummy. Initially there is quite a lot to take in but it is not a difficult game to learn. Unlike, say Bridge, Mah Jong is played for oneself so there is no worry about letting a partner down. We are a friendly group and there is always time to socialise between hands and during the tea break. We have space for about two more players and are happy to teach beginners. We meet weekly on Tuesdays, in United Reformed Church Hall from 2.00 until 4.30pm.
